COVID-19

If you visit Thimphu and Paro these days, you will have a special experience being Bhutanese and living in Bhutan. You shall see the familiar faces in the town, talking conversant language and of course having a common thought. All are Bhutanese walking in the town. You won't see the crowded tourists in the town, nor the regional tourists in the market. People seem to be extra cautious when it comes to meeting and talking to each other. If you see the foreign tourists (hardly seen though), it has a feeling burning inside you that make you feel hesitant to even have a glance. I know it's not right for oneself to consider the way that it is taken into account. Not every tourist is infected with the virus nor every infected individual are tourists.

COVID-19 which stands for Corona Virus Disease - 2019 is a typical virus that was first identified in  Wuhan China in December 2019.  Ever since then, it got spread in the whole world bringing the attention of the World Health Organization (WHO) recognizing COVID-19 as a pandemic on March 11, 2020. The number of confirmed cases of COVI-19 is increasing. As I am jotting this I can sense the number is counting from 234,073 confirmed cases. A total of 9,840 confirmed deaths and around 177 countries are infected with the deadly disease. This information is as per the information shared by WHO.

There is a report of a confirmed positive case in our country when an American tourist was tested positive on March 5, 2020. The case was well-taken care under the dynamic leadership of His Majesty the king. It was learned that His Majesty has spent the whole night in the hospital guiding the health officials and paving the way forward. Immediately the schools and institution of Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha was closed for the period of 14 days looking at the travel history of the tourist. We were very fortunate to have great leadership at this difficult time. Our Prime Minister, who himself is a doctor advises every Bhutanese to be calm, clean and cooperative.

Many initiatives are taken to help the government in combating the virus from spreading. The safety of the people is the primary objective whatever the cost may be. Every individual coming to Bhutan are quarantined for 14 days free of cost. Many hoteliers are coming forward in providing their services free of cost and some on the discounted rate in this difficult time.

With an increase in arrivals of Bhutanese from outside, it was felt necessary to close all the schools, institutions, gatherings, meetings, etc. All the schools in the country remained close w.e.f 18.03.2020 until further notice. The move was welcomed by all and the ministry of education is trying every way possible to teach the students. For the first time it is happening and I am very sure that there will be fault while implementing which should be solvable with due course of time.

I wish this will end soon. RIP for those who left this world due to COVID-19. Get well soon to those who are infected. Take care and be safe.
