Crime
Bhutan is a small country sandwiched between two giants; in the south, we have India, the largest Democracy in the world with a population of 1.3 billion and in the north, we have our neighbor China, the world's most populous country with a population of 1.4 billion. Bhutan with hardly a population of 0.8 million in population, the crime rates that are reported daily in the Newspapers and in the Television are alarming. Crime can be of any activity that can be harmful not only to the individual but also to a community/society and to the state as a whole. Corruption is on the rise in our country having much of the repercussion to the status of an individual when it is surfaced in the domain of the public.
Now why the act that is forbidden and that can be punishable by the law is committed?
There could be thousands of reasoning if one ask the victim. As far as I am concerned I could think of the following reasons that may have caused to commit:
- Unemployment: I think of this reason for the first instance because most of the victims are youths. Having studied and had spent almost a quarter half of the life in schooling with the intention to get enrolled in some decent jobs after graduation, it is hard to accept the fact that the jobs available in the market are too less compared to the number of graduated looking for it. Thus adding it to the number of unemployment. The young mind doesn't have a platform to divert their energy and as a result, they tend to land up in an unethical job. Substance abuse, Drugs smuggling, Gang Fights, Alcohol-related problem etc are some of the crimes that our youths form the biggest number.
- Social Pressure: The desire to show off and want to acquire the things that somebody got, competing with others and comparing who is better, results in the mental pressure to go beyond the boundary to have it. That sometimes leads to vandalism. Chorten vandalism is rampant these days. The one who commits the crime is also a Buddhist and he knows that the act of destroying the old chortens is not right from the Buddhist point. So Why he do that? The social pressure of owning the life of others leads to crime.
- No Parental Guidance: Lack of parental advice pave a road towards criminal acts. Showing the right way and directing the kids when they are young are the most essential lesson they will receive that will definitely shape their life ahead. Nowadays young people are left alone, far away from their parents and the parents are not aware of the whereabouts of one's child until a time when they are way too far in the darkness. Advising and guiding the young mind will help in building the reluctance to crime.
- Urban Migration: Migrating from Rural to Urban has become the trend followed by all walks of life making Urban life more congested and adding a different lot of people competing for day to day necessity. If one closely follows the reason behind this migration, it comes to one conclusion, that's due to better facilities in urban areas. If the basic facilities are shifted to the rural areas and if the rural life is made easier by providing necessary needs then I feel the migration will be on ease.
