Filling of Water Conductor System

Mangdechhu Hydroelectric project is envisaged as a run of river scheme with a head of 733 m and will have an installed capacity of 720 MW. The water diverted from the Mangdechhu will be carried by the means of HRT of 13.5 KM long to UGPH near Yurmu village. 
Reservoir Filling 

The nation has an eye on MHPA commissioning and the people of Bhutan, especially Civil Servants and the media are closely following the updates of MHPA status. The tariff has been negotiated between the two governments at Nu. 4.12 per unit which will be increased by 10 % every five years. Many developmental activities have planned and many are on the pipeline keeping the benchmark of MHPA commissioning. Many deadlines have been missed with some genuine reasons and today the deadline stands on 10th May 2019, which I pray it is materialized. 


Adit-II Plug
Filling of the Reservoir at Dam site has started after successfully plugging the Diversion tunnel. The actual filling started on 2nd April 2019. As on today, the water level at Dam Reservoir reads 1730 m which has an FRL at EL 1747m. The filling of HRT has started on 23.04.2019. The water level of HRT is monitored with the level of Surge Shaft. All the employees of HRT were eagerly waiting for the water level to reach the level of their respective Adits to observe the defects and leakages from the Adit Plugs. Daily 2 readings were taken and all were informed of the water level. I anxiously wait for the level to reach 1704 m (Adit-II Invert Level) and then waited for the level to show 1710.5 m (1704 + 6.5) so that the water is filled to the capacity. As the water gets to its desired capacity, I pray that nothing severe that leads to a catastrophe happen at my site and of course to all the sites. The call was answered on 26th April when the level reads at 1714 m where little seepage is observed at LHS below SPL. Dipping was also observed inside the Gallery from the joints of 7th & 8th Panel. All is well if compared to other Adits but nothing was assured and the worst may be waiting as the pressure builds up with the increase of water level. Truly, it got even worse the next day as the seepage made its way out from the Crown. As I jokingly inform my friends that Dupchu (Holy Water) at Adit-II increased its flow. It was a continuous flow (not that Alarming) as some of the experienced people says, it is expected. I did my part in informing EIC and got him to visit it immediately along with the contractor. One line of Grouting was recommended which the contractor assured to be done immediately after treating Adit-IV.

The level as on 27th says 1720 m. It was advised by the Design team not to stop the filling of HRT and the team suggests the water level up to MDDL (1730.5). Unlike past days, it was understood that daily 1m level will be increased. After reaching the MDDL level, all the sites will be checked thoroughly and the required treatment will be done.

 Religious ceremonies are conducted for the successful commissioning of the project.

Now, only we can do is to pray. SIncerely pray that the seepage won't break through to the surface along the village of Changray/Samcholing.

COVID-19 is a Blessing

PC; Google Ever since WHO declared COVID-19 as a pandemic, many countries have limited the entry and exit, many have closed the borders and at an individual level, everyone takes the initiative to keep ourselves clean.   Every nation advises its citizens to stay at home and some companies have started to implement a strategy “Work from Home”.   Social distancing for a meter is recommended by WHO to prevent the spread of the virus.  Many deaths are reported. It was learned that the corpse are buried without proper funeral rites and the family members are not allowed to meet the deceased. Once the virus is infected, the victims are isolated in a separate room where none are allowed to visit. It is so heartening to see the rate of spreading is so high.
