Dewatering of HRT

With the filling of the reservoir and successfully charging the HRT, and with the water level reaching MDDL of 1730 m; the seepage of various Adits (I, II, III, IV & V) are monitored regularly by installing V-Notch. The readings of the discharge have been found alarming by the concerned authority and the decision of dewatering/emptying the HRT has been finalized. The decision was implemented forming a special committee for strict monitoring and ensuring the success of dewatering activity in HRT.

Prior to the above decision from the chairman, the management of MHPA has written to the chairman stating the risks associated while draining out the water and to wait till September-2019 so that the water level at the reservoir would be decreased substantially. It even went on to explain that the seepage observed at the various Gates are not imposing any structural damage threat to the project and the drawdown of the water level in HRT shall be posing much more risks for the concrete lining which shall show micro-cracking. However, it was found that it is simply very risky to continue taking a risk, therefore the decision was taken and was advised for immediate action to lower the level by 6 m per day as recommended by the NHPC consultants. The risks associated with the huge volume of water is reiterated and the daily lowering of 3 m was finalized.

A total volume of 516,533 cum of water is being stored starting from Intake Tunnel, Desilting Chamber, Branch HRT, HRT and Surge Shaft, that needs to be drained out. Nearly about 80 m water level needs to be taken out starting the MDDL level of 1730 m to the invert level of Surge shaft 1650 m. An average of 20,000 cum of water needs to be drained out daily considering 3 m drawdown, which will take 27 days tentatively. That speaks that the May-10 commissioning of MHPA is out in the thin air. The lowering of water level starts from 6-May-2019.

After emptying the tunnel, the Gates will be repaired and the rectification work in various Adits will be done, which I foresee will take another month. Again refilling of HRT would take 15 days, which on an average I would say by 1st week August-2019 (keeping on the higher side) MHPA shall be ready to commission.

Fingers Crossed, Everything goes as per plan.
