Final Walk in the Tunnel
Inspecting Adit-I Gate |
When the people of India were anxiously waiting for the Election results to announce with excitement and doubtful face and when Bhutanese people wait for the opening ceremony of 2nd session of the 3rd Parliament where His Majesty will be gracing the occasion; it was where the group of 15 people that comprises the representatives of NHPC, DGPC, DHPS, MHPA (HRT, PMG, QA/QC, and Geology) prepares heading to the HRT Tunnel for the very last time. Helmets on top, Gumboots were worn and a Torch each at hand proceeds to Adit-I. I can sense the fake smiles on every individual and can make out what if the Gates of the Intake is open when all were inside the Tunnel? What could be the situation after discharging? Will it be slippery? Will there be flowing water?
Dead Fish |
Nowhere, the HRT is observed after dewatering and I knew that all are experiencing for the first time. It made it a rare opportunity for us to see the tunnel after it was charged and that became more exciting out of gloomy weather.
Our queries were answered with no doubt that it was clean with little deposits of silts and there are no worries slipping off the tunnel. Started at 10:30 AM from Adit-I and we came out from Adit-III at 1:00 PM. A total of 7+ KM of the tunnel were inspected and found out that it was intact the way it should be. All the members were satisfied when it was Chief HRT that nominates me to note down the observations made by the team.
At Adit-III Gate |
I was like, stopping all the members and reminding them that we have completed the length of F1 and now venturing into F2 (viz F3, F4, F5) and if they have anything to say. The team was satisfied and nothing major observations were recorded.
As we walk, we found some dead fishes and were all rotten. The smell of the fishes that were collected initially in a sack was so terrible. It was Tshering Lhendup that carries the sack and we jokingly said, we need to be faster than TL if we were to neglect the smell.
In front of Adit-III Portal |
All in all, I had a great experience walking and remembered the challenges faced while constructing the Tunnel. I had good memories with the Foreman and Workers. I have walked 100s of time to get the work done. It pinched me knowing that I will never see it again.
There we are out of the Tunnel at 1:00PM, in front of Adit-III portal; all seem to be checking their cell phones to see the results. Then it came to know that BJP is leading and Modi will be PM for the second term. We headed for the Lunch at Dam Colony Mess.
I pray for those Dead Fishes "OM MANI PADME HUM".
PS: Inspection was done on 23.05.2019 (Thursday)
